A chiunque è capitato, almeno una volta nella vita, di trovarsi di fronte a un’altra lingua e sentirsi spaesati, mentre si ascolta una canzone che si vorrebbe capire, o di fronte a qualche nuovo slogan in inglese che è sempre più facile incontrare quotidianamente.
Questo è esattamente quello che è successo a Charlie, 22 anni, scozzese, arrivato a Napoli per giocare nella squadra di rugby si è ritrovato in Italia senza sapere una parola di italiano. La prima cosa che ha pensato di fare, semplice e apparentemente veloce, è stata quella di provare dei corsi, ma si è presto reso conto che stava imparando grammatica oggi per parlare la lingua tra un anno.
“Avevo bisogno di parlare e avevo bisogno di farlo subito” dice. “Preferivo sbagliare ma farmi capire che aspettare di diventare perfetto e perdere tempo.”
Il metodo Convox è nato quando Charlie ha cercato una lista di verbi che gli servivano per fare la spesa e andare dal meccanico e come formare passato, presente e futuro il più facilmente possibile. Di solito si esce di casa con telefono, portafogli e chiavi, ma per Charlie era VERBI, telefono, portafogli e chiavi.
Da questa esperienza Charlie non ha solo imparato l’italiano ma ha anche iniziato a pensare a chi si trova nella posizione opposta. In Italia iniziamo a fare corsi di inglese a scuola da quando abbiamo 5 anni, eppure l’Italia e la Francia, nonostante registrino segno di miglioramento nel livello di conoscenza tra gli adulti, risultano ancora indietro nella classifica di paesi che parlano l’inglese correntemente, come conferma il Sole 24 Ore.
Questo dato ci conferma che qualcosa nel metodo scolastico di studio non funziona e Charlie pensa che la mancanza di interesse personale sia uno dei più grandi scogli.
“Tra i ragazzi, quelli che parlano meglio l’inglese non sono quelli che lo hanno studiato a scuola, ma quelli che lo usano ogni giorno per i fatti loro.” Ci dice. “se vuoi guardare tutorial di videogiochi su YouTube e li trovi solo in inglese, non ti fermi. E così impari.”
L’obiettivo di questo corso è quello di non creare macchine parlanti, ma di portare la tua persona in nuovi ambienti e di darti la possibilità di sentirti a tuo agio nel provare, sapendo di avere Convox come rete di sicurezza.
La prova che questo metodo funzioni è proprio Charlie:
“Non ho certificazioni in Italiano, anche se mi piacerebbe averle, ma riesco a parlare e non ho problemi a seguire conversazioni.”

It has happened to everyone: you are listening to a song, looking at a text and cannot understand a single word of that language.
That happened to Charlie too; 22 years old, Scottish, just got to Naples to play rugby, without knowing any Italian. First thing he thought about was taking some courses, the traditional way, but then he realized that he would be learning grammar and wouldn’t be able to speak with anyone. For a year. At least.
“I needed to speak and I needed it right there and then” says Charlie. “I thought it was better to make errors and be understood than to wait to be perfect and don’t speak at all.”
The Convox Method was born when Charlie wrote a list of verbs and how to make past, present and future in the easiest way. Traditionally you leave the house with phone, wallet and keys, but with Charlie it was VERBS, phone, wallet and keys!
Not only learning Italian, he also started to think of those in the opposite position. Sure, in Italy you start studying English when you are five, but still there aren’t that many that speak fluently and, alongside with France, the peninsula is in one of the last places where English is well spoken in Europe. This shows that the scholastic method may not be the best to learn a language, and Charlie thinks that the lack of personal interest is one of the biggest problematic.
“Out of all the kids in school, the ones that speak the best English aren’t those who just studied it, but those that use it every day for themselves. If you want to see a tutorial on YouTube and you can only find it in English you are not going to stop, and meanwhile you are learning.”
Grammar won’t be forgotten, but you will learn it with your own time, and you will be talking even before knowing all the rules.
The aim of this course is not to create talking robots, but to take you to new places and open the door to new opportunities while having the confidence to feel good in them, always knowing you have Convox to check your back.
